CHAPTER SIX

FOR THE FIRST time since she had arrived, Sophie was able to appreciate Matias’s sprawling mansion at leisure because she stayed to cook him breakfast the following morning and the morning after that.

‘But I thought all the guests had gone,’ Julie had proffered in a puzzled voice, when Sophie had phoned and told her the situation.

Sophie had muttered something and nothing about not all the guests having gone just yet, and what choice did she have considering she was indebted to the man and so had to do as he commanded or else face having their business dismantled like a house of Lego bricks in the hands of a hyperactive toddler.

She could just about extrapolate sufficient truth from what she had said to paper over her guilt at playing truant, because that was what it felt like.

She was preparing breakfast for Matias but that was just a nonsense excuse for what she was really doing. She was his lover and she was enjoying every second of it. Having curled up into herself after her experience with Alan, she was feeling liberated in a way she had never hoped to be. She was, she felt, on a journey of self-discovery and she had stopped asking herself how that was possible when Matias was so unsuitable. She just knew that he gave something to her, added some crazy dimension to her life that made her forget all the principles she had spent her life nurturing.

She was being reckless for the first time in her life and she was liking it.

You’re not your mother, Matias had told her and she had actually listened and allowed herself to unbend and live a little without beating herself up about it. Okay, so Matias wasn’t going to be around for ever but that didn’t mean that she was going to suddenly develop a taste for inappropriate men. No, Matias was her walk on the wild side and why shouldn’t she enjoy him while she had the chance?

He was rich, he was powerful, he was arrogant and he was self-assured to the point of ridiculous, but he was also, she had discovered, an extremely thoughtful lover, a good laugh, was weirdly tuned into her thoughts and just so, so unbelievably clever.

Hovering on the fringes of her enjoyment, however, was the looming certainty that he wouldn’t be around for much longer, although when she thought about that a guilty little voice whispered in her head, But won’t he be...? After all, you’ll still have to pay off the rest of your debt...maybe there’ll be more breakfasts to be prepared...

Breakfast this morning had been an elaborate concoction of eggs, spinach, ham and a hollandaise sauce on freshly baked bread.

The smell of the bread still lingered in the kitchen as Sophie tidied away the dishes while Matias reclined at the kitchen table like a lord and master, replete after having his appetite sated.

She turned around and he beckoned her across and patted his lap.

‘Sit,’ he commanded with a grin,
